Seventeen-year-old Daisy Stoneman is commonly known around Palos Verdes High School for her unique and ‘out-there’ fashion that has become a part of what makes her, her. Her fashion journey begins with Kim Stoneman, Daisy’s mother, who learned about fashion from a young age from her grandmother. She learned how to sew and cut clothes and pair them together but never actively pursued it outside of that. When she went to college she studied kinesiology, nothing related to fashion and worked for a few years, but she then had her three kids and became a wonderful mother. When Daisy, her youngest daughter was in middle school and old enough to be self dependent, Kim opened GUS, her own vintage fashion store in Redondo Beach.
By the time Daisy was in eighth grade GUS was a popular store in the community for cute vintage one of a kind pieces with good vibes and home style feel. For six years Kim spent countless hours pursuing her dreams and making them a reality. She poured her heart and soul into her work, making custom flannels, pillows, jeans, and more, each sold with a tag made from her own personal childhood photos. Each tag is made of vintage photos from when her grandparents, her best friends, and family were growing up. With all her items having personal meaning, so did the name. The name GUS most think is the family dog's name, but in reality, the name goes much farther back. When Kim and her friends were younger they lived in a small town where everyone knew everything about everyone. When her and her friends had crushes on boys they would use the word ‘Gus’ as a code word. Brining memories into every aspect was Kim’s goal for her store. When Daisy entered high school she was consumed by the same ideas everyone else was, ‘fit in’, ‘wear what everyone else does’ and ‘be perfect’. Throughout her first two years of high school Daisy felt as though she could not express herself and felt like she was put in a box by a group of girls who bullied her into a mold. After years of trying to express herself with her mom’s help and learning to love herself she became obsessed with fashion and used it to learn to have confidence in herself. With this new found confidence, Daisy would spend hours at night picking out outfits and making many combinations to wear a new outfit to school everyday. By the time she was going into senior year Daisy had found her confidence but also her love and passion for fashion. With her drive to continue fashion Daisy feels as though she has finally found her outlet to let her creativity shine and get through the toughest times in her life. Her love for fashion and its many lanes has now become one the biggest parts of Daisy’s life and has only built up an amazing relationship with herself and her mother. Known at school for her unique and creative fashion Daisy hopes to go into college and study fashion and pursue her dreams just as her mom did.
