Environmental Effects of Quarantine

Los Angeles, California is commonly known for its overly polluted air. Sky lines are usually incredibly blurred and smog, smoke, and pollution fills the air. For the past three months the Los Angeles area has been on a restrictive lockdown due to the Coronavirus. This lockdown has kept citizens from commuting or leaving the house. Though people are not completely complying, there is a drastic difference.

For the first time in over 30 years Los Angeles has one of the clearest air qualities it has ever had. People can finally see the Hollywood sign from their homes, and the skyline is as clear as ever. So why did it take a global pandemic for us to see that our life has an impact on this planet?

For years keeping Earth green and wildlife campaigns have been popular but widely overlooked. Due to this global pandemic people are finally seeing that driving out cars everyday, burning chemicals, wasting fuel and overusing large factories is causing drastic harm. Because of Covid-19 most jobs are closed as well as schools and other facilities. Because of this driving is decreased and all factory and chemical jobs have been almost completely shut down. The bustling city of Los Angeles has finally slowed down and we are seeing the changes.

I, for the first time in seven years, can see the Hollywood sign from my window as well as each building in the city. Personally seeing these undenyable changes has made me want to make a difference in our community, but also the world, to keep this beautiful planet safe. I now grasp the weight of how much our lifestyle impacts the planet and am now trying to live a cleaner lifestyle.

To live cleaner I have started walking or biking rather than driving, as well as switching over to only reusable plastics. I also have tried to plant things in my backyard as well as eat cleaner. The more we pay attention to these small, but manageable details, this bigger difference we can make, but this time in a good way.

Though quarantine won't last forever, the effects it has had on the environments should. I challenge all who read this to take this as the silver lining of Covid-19 and use it to benefit your health and the earth’s as well. Drive less, eat better, and use reusable plastics, it is that simple. So, though Corona Virus has had terrible effects on the economy and lives of meny, lets look at the bright side and continue to help our planet.
