Trying to revamp your wardrobe into something you love can be an intimidating process. I have found that breaking it up into simple steps is a great way to ease into the process and end with a closet that makes you feel comfortable and confident.
1. Know yourself Getting to know yourself is the most important step. Oftentimes we find ourselves wanting to go with certain trends that on paper (or in picture) look perfect but we may not feel the most comfortable and confident when we wear it ourselves. What other people are wearing does not have to be what you are wearing. Here are some quick questions you can ask yourself & start to think about: Are you an active person? What words describe your personality best? What colors do you love? What patterns do you love? What are some past outfits you have felt most confident in? Who are some of your fashion icons? Does your school or work require a certain dress code? Answering questions such as these can help avoid buying pieces that will end up staying in the back of your closet for years. Every trend is not for everybody and that is okay. 2. Know your body type Dressing for your certain body type is a great way to boost confidence while wearing clothes you love. Every body type is beautiful and dressing to accentuate that beauty is the goal. The link below is a great place to help discover what body type you are and what type of clothing best compliments it. https://www.stitchfix.com/women/blog/fashion-tips/find-fit-for-your-body-type/ 3. Assess your current wardrobe Your closet could already be filled with several pieces that you love. Looking for repetitions in what you already have is a great way to start. Do you gravitate towards graphic tees and neutral tones or bright colors and patterns. Think of what you wear most often and which clothing and colors bring you the most joy. A good way to discover which clothes you are wearing on a daily basis is to go through and turn your hangers around and put your worn clothing back in the other direction. This gives you a clear idea of what you do and don’t gravitate towards. If your clothes aren’t hung, you can create a separate space for consistently worn clothing. And, unless there is an important reason to keep the unworn clothes, if you don’t wear them, you probably don’t need to keep them. Don’t keep your closet full of pieces you don’t love. 4. Find inspiration Before diving into things such as instagram or pinterest - which are both great resources - it’s important to understand that we’re not looking for reasons to feel self-conscious or intimidated, we’re looking for people and clothing that can inspire us. A great way to use instagram to find inspiration is to create a completely separate account for fashion. The instagram explore page can get filled with several random pictures and memes that can make it hard to find things you love. Creating a separate account that you only look at for clothes can ensure that your explore page will be filled with fashion pictures only. Creating a pinterest board is also a great way to find inspiration. Once these things are created you can look for patterns in what you have chosen. Look for the colors and types of clothing that repeat the most, helping you narrow your style down even further. Then, while shopping you can look at what you have liked and saved for reference! 5. Take it slow! Start with buying a couple of pieces at a time. Then, try to create outfits with those pieces and make sure that you are moving in a direction that you love. From there you can reassess and continue expanding your wardrobe. When you put an outfit on that you adore and feel amazing in, document it! It can help you further discover what makes you feel most you. Remember, practice makes perfect. Not every outfit needs to be runway ready and it takes time to create a complete wardrobe. Be patient with yourself and remember to have fun!
